Dear Georgia PIRG member,
I love Georgia and I love Atlanta. I love the people, the places, and I loved watching Atlanta grow into the capitol of the South—a world-class city capable of hosting the 1996 Olympic games. As our city grows, it’s critical that our dedication to quality of life and public health keeps up.
We’ve got some of the worst air quality in the country, both inside and outside. Traffic congestion has clogged our roads and polluted our air, while secondhand smoke continues to contaminate the places where we work and eat.
Georgia has made big changes for the better in the past. Now is no different.
It’s time to catch up with other cities when it comes to quality of life. Cities like New York, Chicago and Washington D.C., banned smoking in restaurants and bars and have public transit systems that offer people real transportation choices.
But in the next few months, Georgia could make big strides on both issues. Thanks to recent legislation, local governments now have the ability to fund and create new transit projects, and Georgia PIRG has jump-started a new effort to get second-hand smoke out of restaurants and bars. Of course, we wouldn’t be able to do any of this without your support. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Thompson
